It looks Like CNN just picked up YouTube star, Casey Neistat and his video sharing app Beme for around $25 million. Casey interests us as he is instantly recognizable by his unique, custom sunglasses.
Beme describes itself as an “unfiltered way to share your personal experience,” it captures video when you cover your phones proximity sensors, the idea being you hold your phone to your chest and it records, rather than you holding your phone in front of you. The video you just shot is then immediately uploaded without you seeing or editing it.
The social app got off to a decent start in 2015 with claims of over a half million downloads in it's first week, but then it seemed to falter. The app appeared to have failed only for it to relaunch in May 2016, but hasn't got near the success of Snapchat, and now has Instagram as a competitor also.
My guess is CNN is more interested in access to Neistat and his audience rather than the social platform.
Casey recently announced he would be ending his daily YouTube blog to focus on other projects, so this all kind of makes sense now.
Mr Neistat has built quite the brand up to press, I wonder if he will be able to keep it going in his new partnership...?
