I tell you this tidbit because England is not particularly known for its year round sunshine, and this information is relevant to the beginning of Faded Days.
You see, when you live in a sunshine starved city as I did, a pair of sunglasses can last you, well…forever. You infrequently wear them, therefore you have very little opportunity to lose them or break them. With that in mind, I didn’t have any problem spending hefty cash on a pair of sunglasses, as I saw them as a lifelong investment. And then I moved to Florida.
To make a long story even longer, in my first few years of living in Orlando, I must have lost, misplaced or broken close to ten pairs of sunglasses. Owning sunglasses became a very expensive hobby.
I’m sure you can see where I’m going with this.
In 2011 I set out with a goal born through my own necessity. I wanted to produce a high quality, great looking pair of sunglasses that were affordable and durable. At this stage I wasn’t really serious about opening an online store, I just wanted some nice sunglasses. However once I started wearing my new Faded Days line I was getting so many positive comments, I knew I had to share them.
In late November 2012 I opened FadedDays.com from the back bedroom of my home (yes, I launched a sunglasses brand at the beginning of winter, I told you I didn’t fully intend for this to be a business), with one member of staff, me.
Since opening FadedDays.com our team has grown and we have been blown away with how popular our sunglasses have become. The positivity and feedback we get from our customers is truly amazing, and it’s often so “inline” with why I opened a sunglasses company to begin with. I think because Faded Days was started to fulfill a genuine personal need, it makes our success so much more rewarding.
In 2019 we launched our XXL line of sunglasses for big heads through Kickstarter and the emails from happy customers poured in. Mostly along the lines of, "thank you so much, I've never had a pair of sunglasses that fit properly before"!
When most people think of major sunglasses brands, they think of the likes of Ray-Ban, Oakley, Maui Jim, and a bunch of other big name companies, (oooh, look at me, shouting out other sunglasses companies)!
What a lot of people don't realize is that these brands generally stop at a certain size glasses frame width, and that leaves a wonderful group of people uncatered for.
Those with larger head sizes often have a difficult time finding sunglasses that fit properly and look good, so we decided to change that. Going forward, a large part of our focus will be on providing the "wide head sunglasses", underserved market, with the best fitting, most attractive sunglasses for big heads. The goal is to have a really solid selection of great looking sunglasses for all of our customers, no matter their head size. It's not a big enough market to interest the big manufacturers, but because we run lean and mean, (I'm very mean), it's a lovely space for us to be able to sow our creative juices and become everything I promised my father I would be, when I was just a little girl growing up in Leeds.
Worry not though, we are not going to neglect the people with the regular sized heads, of which I am one. With a wide selection of styles and colors to choose from, Faded Days has glasses for everyone! In addition, I personally am always on hand to help customers find eyewear with a great fit for their needs, I'm just an email away at Longman@Faded-Days.com
As we continue to move forward, our team and I would like to invite you to join us, and see if we can provide even more options for a niche market that has been long neglected.
